As part of HÖRFA’s ‘Save our Species’ campaign, the fourth of six limited edition prints is a celebration of the charming Cheloniidae.
The Sea Turtle is an iconic creature of the sea. They can grow up to 1.2metres long, weigh up to 130kg and can live up to 100 years.
They have a strong, tear-drop shaped shell, called a ‘Carapace’, which covers most of their body, except for their head and four flippers. This carapace can include shades of different colours including brown, green, yellow and black.
Just like last month’s animal – the Rhinoceros – sea turtles have been around for a very long time, it’s estimated they have existed for around 110 million years, which means they once shared the planet with a Tyrannosaurus Rex.
Like homing pigeons, they too can detect the earth’s magnetic field and use as a compass, meaning they have an impeccable sense of direction.
Unfortunately, their species is endangered, which is why HÖRFA will donate part of the proceeds from every sale of this print directly to WWF to help towards their vital conservation work.
Worldwide, six of the seven sea turtle species are classified as threatened or endangered due to human actions and lifestyles. The biggest threats include entanglement in fishing nets, pollution, marine debris and waste, consumption and poaching.
These guys play such an important role in the ecosystem, we simply couldn’t live without them. They maintain a healthy seabed - often referred to as the ocean’s lawnmowers - providing key habitat for marine life, helping to balance marine food webs and facilitating nutrient cycling from water to land.
So, it’s critical that we support charities like the WWF who are doing all they can to help conservation of endangered species in the wild.
Do your bit by buying this adorable aquatic print for you or for a friend. Or you can visit www.org.uk and donate towards their cause instead.
The limited-edition prints are available for January only, so once it's gone… it's gone!
