As part of HÖRFA’s ‘Save our Species’ campaign, the first of six limited edition prints is a celebration of the Panthera tigris – the largest of the Felidae species.

The Tiger is the most loved of all big cats, which is why it’s so distressing to hear that they are among the most endangered animals on the planet.

Wild tiger populations have declined by around 95% since the beginning of the 20th century. There’s now estimated to be around only 3,900 wild tigers left.

Each tiger has a unique set of stripes, like a human fingerprint. The majestic creatures can be found in isolated forests and grasslands throughout Asia.

Poaching is one of the biggest threats to tigers, mainly killed for luxurious products using their skin and bones. Their loss of habitat is another concern for their survival being forced into small, scattered islands resulting in their range reducing by 95% since historical times. As their range and environment declines, they come closer and closer to people which leads to conflict as they are forced to protect their families and also their livestock.

The WWF are determined to help double the figures of wild tigers to over 6,000 by 2022, which coincidentally is the next Chinese year of the tiger.

To achieve this, they are focusing on conservation in 13 priority landscapes, including areas in Nepal, India and Russia. At a groundbreaking international tiger summit in 2010, governments from all 13 tiger range countries committed to this ambitious and visionary species conservation goal and created a global plan for tiger conservation and recovery.
