‘Save our Species’ March Campaign – Limited Edition Elephant Print

As part of HÖRFA’s ‘Save our Species’ campaign, the final part of six limited edition prints is a celebration of the Elephantidae family.

There are three recognised species of elephants – the African bush elephant, which is the world’s largest land animal; the African forest elephant, and the Asian elephant.

Remarkably, these colossal creatures are the only surviving family of the order Proboscidea, which includes extinct members, mammoths and mastodons.

Elephants can live up to 70 years in the wild and are one of the closest animals to humans, emotionally. Their calves are playful and very dependent for the first three years of their lives, staying close to their mother. Teenage elephants can be stroppy and defiant, and there’s always a respected matriarch who leads the family.

They have a lot of self-awareness and empathy, and have been known to show respect and compassion towards dying and dead family members, even holding processions similar to a funerals to show their respects.

Their tusks are actually teeth, which continue to grow throughout their lives, and are useful tools for eating and defending their selves against predators and threats, but unfortunately, they are also a detriment due to their selfish demand from human poachers.

Ivory is incredibly sought after, which devastatingly means that around 50 elephants are killed per day, which is an unsustainable rate, with more killed per day than born.

Shockingly, around 90% of African elephants have been wiped out in the past century due to the ivory trade.

The WWF work in east Africa and across Asia to protect and manage elephant habitat and create safe ‘wildlife corridors’ so elephants can migrate safely.

Elephants can have a big impact on their surroundings, which, in turn, causes human conflict so the WWF are supporting local people and farmers by protecting their lands with solar panel electric fences, as well as installing beehives – elephants hate bees!

HÖRFA are helping too, and so can you, as profits from every sale of this print will be donated directly to WWF to help towards their vital conservation work.
